Virtual Field Trips: Let the World be Your Classroom

Updated: Mar 31, 2020

Virtual field trips are a way to transport your students or your children to different places around the world. Many museums, zoos, and other public places offer virtual field trips and many educators use them in their classrooms to help transport their students to the places they are studying. There are a wide variety of tools all around the web for these incredible trips. Many educators are currently sharing compiled lists of their favorites. I hope they help you explore the world from home, now and in the future.

Virtual Field Trip Calendar for March-May! Check out the calendar here! I'm looking for the original author to give them credit, this was shared on numerous Facebook groups for educators focused on distance learning.

Mrs. Fahrney is the educator who created this list, I'm hoping to track her down to give her full credit. This document has been shared through multiple educator groups on Facebook. To access the full document, click here.

My favorite tool for virtual field trips is Skype in the Classroom. This is run through Microsoft's Educator Community. There are tons of tools for educators and ways to sign up located on this site, check it out!

If you're looking for something STEM related, check out the amazing Skype a Scientist community, they are currently live streaming almost daily with scientists. To learn more click either of these links to learn about the program or see their live streaming schedule.

National Geographic also has an incredible Explorer Classroom program as well as live steaming with scientist and explorers from around the world, check it out.

Google Earth is an excellent tool to use to bring the world to your classroom. Google has created several resources for teachers who want to use Google Earth as a resource for their classroom. Teachers have now even created their own lessons that go with Google Earth. Here's a great free downloadable example from Cristi Moore.

Tools/Sites for Teacher Use- these resources are all located in a Wakelet I previously created for professional development sessions for teachers, focused on global education. These tools were specifically selected to help you create a global community within your classroom. Some of these tools are designed for when we are teaching our students in person, but many can also be used now as we switch to remote/virtual teaching.
